7S750 - State of the art in building performance simulation

Aims

Given the (increasing) complexity of energy/ environmental systems in buildings, computer modeling and simulation is needed for design and performance evaluation.  This class presents the underlying theoretical and operational principles, and provides training in the use of state of the art building performance simulation software.

Prior knowledge

7S410 - Introduction to building performance simulation (aka 7S820 - Basis building performance simulation) or equivalent is recommended.

Key concepts

Class structure

By a series of lectures and workshops, this class introduces the benefits, concepts, assumptions and limitations of state of the art building performance simulation methods. The practical work is designed to demonstrate theoretical concepts introduced in the lectures, and to gain practical "hands-on" experience in using state of the art building performance simulation software for design of building and systems.

Assessment

Continuous assessment based on pro-active participation of scheduled activities - lectures, instructions and practical work - and successful completion of a series of assignments. The assignments are detailed below. Please follow instructions for preparing and submitting your report.

Class schedule and resources

For scheduled class hours and location see http://owinfo.tue.nl/ Every week there are four hours reserved for this class. Lectures will be during the first scheduled hour of each week. All other hours are for self-study of the worked-out examples and for the assignments. During the timeslots without lectures, a staff member will be available for questions and support from the beginning of the scheduled time, as long as there are questions. Depending on student demand and staff availability additional contact hours can be requested and agreed later.

The current workshop assignments assume the use of the following building performance simulation software: IES<VE> Installation instructions can be found on the following server: \\archbps1\cbps\Software We offer various additional assignment resources here.
