Capita selecta of modeling and simulation for environmental engineering

Aims

Given the (increasing) complexity of energy/ environmental systems in buildings, computer modeling and simulation is emerging as a viable approach to design and performance evaluation.  As a follow-up to introduction to modeling and simulation for environmental engineering, this Capita Selecta (= selected subjects) class aims to explore in greater depth some selected concepts of this new technology in terms of theory, assumptions, operation and limitations.

Key concepts

Class structure

Using a workshop type approach, this class focuses on a few interesting issues selected from  modeling and simulation for environmental engineering theory. Although introduction to modeling and simulation for environmental engineering  is a pre-requisite, this class is not necessarily restricted to subjects covered in that class, nor will it be restricted to the ESP-r modelling and simulation environment. Software to be discussed might include TRNSYS, DOE, Radiance, Fluent,  Energy-10, or any other relevant building performance simulation software package.

Assessment

Continuous assessment based on pro-active participation of scheduled activities (20%) - lectures, instructions and practical work - and successful completion of a series of assignments (80%). The assignments are detailed below. Please submit  your assignment results by email to the contact person for your faculty. Please keep your answers brief and concise.

Staff involved

Class schedule and resources

Each Friday morning is reserved for this class. The lectures will take place in the K216 lecture room in the Mechanical Engineering building.
During the self-study weeks, one of the above mentioned staff members will be available for questions and support. (Please make contact by email)
Depending on student demand and staff availability there may be additional contact hours.
