Urban Eco-Villages and the Global Future

Declan Kennedy

The eco-village-idea is not just a strategy for small villages but a principle in thinking about building that also can be fertile in urban renewal projects in all kind of cities. Its central aim is to overcome the gap between nature and technology again and to develop ecological technologies, which can be used by the majority of the people in the world.

The approach has to start from the local and its specific conditions and involve people as active, responsible participants. Nature has to be integrated completely and become a visible part of design and building.

Looking back to the experience of the last decades one can show that this approach leads to an optimalisation of the whole: there is reached a rise in efficiency and sufficiency and higher quality at a lower cost.
